Interview: Marquita – Gospel Artist

Q1. How would you describe yourself and your music to someone hearing it for the first time?

Marquita:

I’m a gospel artist based in Atlanta, and my music is rooted in faith, prayer, and Christian testimony. I see music as ministry, not just performance. Everything I write comes from a desire to point people back to God, especially in moments when faith is being tested.

Q2. What first drew you to gospel music?

Marquita:

My relationship with God is the foundation of my life, so gospel music was a natural expression of that. I’ve always believed music is a powerful way to share the message of Jesus Christ, repentance, and salvation. Gospel allows me to be honest about faith, struggle, and hope all at once.

Q3. Your song I Say Yes to You has resonated with listeners. What does that song mean to you?

Marquita:

I Say Yes to You is about surrender. It’s about choosing obedience to God even when the path isn’t clear or comfortable. That song came from a very personal place, and I think people connect with it because we all reach moments where saying “yes” to God requires trust.

Q4. You have a new single, Somebody Pray For Me, coming out January 16. What inspired this release?

Marquita:

Somebody Pray For Me was written during a season when I truly understood the power of intercessory prayer. There are moments when you’re strong enough to believe, and moments when you need someone else to pray on your behalf. This song speaks to that vulnerability and reminds people they’re not alone.

Q5. How does your faith influence your songwriting process?

Marquita:

Faith guides everything — the lyrics, the message, and the intention behind the music. I spend time in prayer before and during the writing process. I want each song to be honest and spiritually grounded, not forced or trendy, but meaningful.

Q6. You’re a graduate of Full Sail University. How has that shaped you as an artist?

Marquita:

Full Sail helped me understand the technical and professional side of music. It taught me how to approach songwriting and production with structure and discipline, while still keeping the heart and purpose of gospel music intact.

Q7. What do you hope listeners take away from your music overall?

Marquita:

I hope people feel encouraged, strengthened, and reminded that God sees them. Whether someone is celebrating or struggling, I want my music to serve as a reminder that prayer matters and that faith still works.

Q8. What’s next for you after the release of Somebody Pray For Me?

Marquita:

After the release of Somebody Pray For Me, I’m continuing to focus on writing and ministry. I’ve recently written more than 150 new gospel songs with the purpose of assisting other artists in spreading the message of Jesus Christ. Songwriting has always been a calling for me, and I see it as a way to support and encourage others who are also using music to share the gospel. I’m remaining open to where God leads next while continuing to release music and serve through songwriting.
