With his female-friendly song, ‘Big Sass’, approaching 1 million streams, Enzo Dennet, artistically known as Enzo, has already become Utah’s most-streamed independent hip-hop artist and not taking into account acts like NBA Youngboy or Post Malone, Enzo is set to become the first rapper from the state of Utah to reach a million streams on a single song, independently and without a feature
With TikTok comments calling him “Baby Drake” and “the next Drake”, Enzo might be just that, but in a different way. The obvious comparisons derive from perhaps his friendly image and melodic song structure; however, Enzo, being from a state known for its religious community, adds layers to what could potentially be an already interesting story. A clip of Enzo’s interview with the legendary DJ Smallz, speaking on an armed robbery he experienced with his mother, sparked a full disclosure in the comments on the state of Utah and whether it has “hood” areas or not. From the outside looking in, it’s easy to write off Salt Lake City as a “Mormon State”, but there may be more there than meets the eye. On top of that, Enzo’s mother is reportedly from Honduras, a 3rd World Latin American country known for its poverty and Afro-Caribbean culture. With the growing popularity of Latin American music in America, Enzo could also offer a fresh take, being the first artist to blend his black & American roots with a different background. Rappers like 6ix9ine and Big Pun have come close, but unfortunately, their careers never reached the pinnacle of music for various reasons.
All things considered, songs like “Outside” & “Where The Huzz At” have global appeal, and are what we in the industry call, radio-ready singles,” which makes it even more shocking that Enzo has flown under the radar for so long. From the outside looking in, it will be interesting to watch Enzo’s story progress into what it could become. Will Utah stamp him as the one to put them on the map? Will hip-hop accept another light-skinned kid from an unknown city? A lot of questions, but the anticipation is enticing.
